What is the Canada ETA?
The Canada Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a mandatory pre-travel entry requirement introduced by the Canadian government for visa-exempt foreign nationals — including British citizens. Without a valid ETA, you will not be permitted to board a flight to Canada.
The Canada ETA is applied for entirely online and is electronically linked to your British passport — there is no stamp, sticker, or card to carry. Once approved, it is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers multiple trips to Canada.

Do British citizens need a Canada ETA?
Yes — without exception. Any British passport holder flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport must hold a valid Canada ETA before departure. This requirement applies whether you are visiting Canada for tourism, business meetings, or simply passing through on your way to another destination.
The ETA requirement is for air travel only. If you are entering Canada by land or sea, different entry rules apply. Not sure where to start? Visit ETA Permits and check your eligibility in seconds on the application page.
Good to know: Your Canada ETA is linked digitally to your British passport number. Airlines verify it automatically at check-in — you don't need to print anything or carry any additional documents. Simply present your passport.
